A leaking chimney means trouble for your fireplace and for your home as well. Water penetration can damage the structure of your chimney, and cause it to deteriorate fast. If you think you may have a chimney leak, don’t wait to have it checked. Many people try to waterproof their chimney but still often end up with a leak. What’s the reason? Let’s take a look.
Here are possible reasons why your chimney is leaking:
- You don’t have a chimney cover: If you don’t have a chimney cover or cap, your chimney is going to get wet when it rains. Water will enter at the top and then run down the inside of the chimney. Getting a chimney cover may be all you need to solve that leak.
- The flashing is cracked: The flashing is the material (usually aluminum) that is put on the part of the chimney that pokes out just above the rooftop. The flashing acts as a water seal, so if it has any cracks or tears, water will get in.
- Cracks in the chimney crown: The crown of the chimney is the cement portion at the top that is designed to keep the rain out. If the crown is cracked, water will be able to seep in.
- Cracks in the bricks: The bricks that form the structure of the chimney can crack over time. This is often as a result of the continuous freezing and melting that takes place throughout the winter months.
Chimney leaks are usually fixable, but it’s important to take action early to prevent any serious damage. It’s a good idea to call in a professional chimney sweep each year to have your chimney and fireplace inspected. You want to be sure that your chimney is up for the harsh winter weather, so that you can keep enjoying those cozy winter fires.
