What Causes Brick Damage to Chimneys?

Chimney brick damage can be caused by a variety of factors, from weathering to moisture to age. It is important to identify and address damages quickly and thoroughly, so as to limit potential dangers.

  • Cracking: Cracks are likely the most common type of chimney brick damage, typically stemming from expansion or contraction due to extreme changing weather conditions. Spalling occurs when chunks of brick break away, caused by excessive moisture which makes them weak over time.
  • Flaking: Flaking describes when chipping pieces of brick create a textured appearance; this is usually a result of rainwater pooling in deep pockets on the surface.
  • Crumbling: Crumbling occurs when large portions of bricks turn into a fine dust that can find its way inside individual masonry units.
  • Erosion: Finally, erosion happens when water seeps into the porous surface and slowly erodes the material. This typically happens in chimneys located near bodies of water or highly exposed areas where water may travel down multiple surfaces before settling on one particular area.

It is essential to address these problems as soon as possible because, if left untreated for an extended period, the structural integrity could be compromised and drifting particles could become airborne – with potentially serious consequences for property owners.

What Is the Purpose of a Chimney Cap?

The purpose of a chimney cap is to keep water, debris, and animals out of your chimney, while still allowing smoke to escape. Without a cap, your chimney is vulnerable to all sorts of issues, including water damage (which is the most invasive), animal infestations, and even chimney fires.

Now, most everyone has seen the single-flue chimney cap. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do, which is keep water out of the chimney system via the chimney flue. What it doesn’t do is keep water off the entire top of the chimney system, including the crown and the bricks on the top and side of the chimney stack. The single flue cap is the most common and the least expensive cap – but unfortunately it’s also the least protective chimney cap.

Because of this, we recommend investing in multi-flue caps or a more full-coverage cap. Ask us about your options – we’ll find the perfect fit for your needs.
