Sitting in front of your fireplace, you are supposed to be all nice and cozy. If you are feeling a cold breeze as you are sitting there or feeling that same breeze when you walk through the room when a fire is not blazing, you may have a problem. After all, cold air is supposed to be outside, not inside!

Here are 3 ways to keep cold air from creeping in through your chimney:

Install Fireplace Doors or Utilize the Ones You Have

Most fireplaces already have doors on them, so you may be lucky enough to have them already. If you do, then you should keep them closed when you do not have a fire going in your fireplace. If you do not have fireplace doors installed, then we recommend having them put in, so that you can keep the cold air out and the warm air in. Ceramic doors are a much better option than the ornamental ones as they absorb the heat and then radiate it out into your room.

Consider Top Sealing Dampers

Top sealing dampers are much better than throat dampers, as they feature a gasket closure instead of metal on metal closures. The top sealing dampers will keep the cold air out and the warm air in your house, and we guarantee that you will notice the difference immediately.

Avoid Vacuums

We are not talking about vacuums with this one. Instead, we are referring to any of the appliances in your home that requires air. These items include kitchen or bathroom vents, a furnace, a clothes drier, and more. These items draw air from your home and in order for your home to replace that air, it is trying to get it from somewhere else. That somewhere else ends up being the chimney. To change that, we recommend cracking a window near the item that you are using.

We know that you are tired of all that cold air inside your home, and the above reasons are all easy to fix with small changes. If you are not sure if any of the above are causing the cold air drafts in your home, a certified chimney sweep can assist you in determining what the issue is and helping you fix it.
