Pretty soon the bell will be ringing for the kids to go to their first class of the school year. While that means that they will be busy with homework and after school activities, it also means that cooler temperatures are on their way.
Here are 4 things that you will want to do now that school is back in session:
- Cleaning and Inspecting Your Chimney: If you have not already had your chimney cleaned and inspected for the upcoming winter season, now is the time to get it done! Creosote can build up inside your chimney and that all needs to be removed before you light your next fire. A chimney professional can remove the creosote as well as any other debris that may have found its way inside your chimney. Once your chimney is clean, they will do an inspection to make sure that there is no damage to your chimney and that it is safe for you to use.
- Purchase Your Wood: It is usually best to purchase your wood early, so that you have the best selection to choose from. You will want to choose hardwood that has been seasoned for at least six months, so that it will burn clean with little smoke.
- Clear Your Hearth: Things seem to accumulate everywhere during the summer months, so now is the time to make sure that everything is off your hearth. This is not the time to place décor and other items that can catch on fire anywhere near your hearth.
- Open Your Damper: We do not expect you to keep your damper open at all times, especially when you do not have a fire burning. However, this should be a friendly reminder that you should open the damper each and every time you light a fire. If not, you will quickly find your home filling up with smoke and potentially harmful gases.
Back to school is an exciting time for many people, especially those who do not like the hot temperatures of the summer. We want to make sure that you are prepared for those cooler temperatures though and recommend that you have your chimney ready for its first fire of the season.
