What Does a Chimney Damper Do?

A damper has a job both when the fireplace is in use and when it is not. When the fireplace is running, the damper opens to let smoke and combustion byproducts up the flue, and it can be adjusted to help control the burn. When the fireplace is off, the damper keeps conditioned air inside the home and blocks drafts, water, debris, and animals from coming down the chimney.

So when homeowners ask whether a damper is really necessary, the short answer is yes. It is one of the components that lets you actually enjoy the fireplace without paying for it every other month on the energy bill.

Throat Dampers, Top-Mount Dampers, and Damper/Cap Combinations

Most older fireplaces in our service area were built with a throat damper, the cast iron plate that sits just above the firebox. Throat dampers do the job at the bottom of the flue, which means they have to handle the full heat of the fire. Over time the plate warps, the frame rusts, and the metal-on-metal seal gets sloppy. Even a new throat damper leaks some conditioned air up the flue, because the seal is never airtight.

When a throat damper is too far gone, or when a homeowner wants a better seal and fewer drafts, we install a top-mount damper instead. Top-mount dampers sit at the top of the chimney, look similar to a chimney cap, and operate by a cable that runs down through the flue to a handle near the firebox. They include a built-in rubber gasket, so when they close they form a true airtight seal. That means 100% of the heat and conditioned air stays in the home, not up the flue.

For homeowners who also need a chimney cap (and most do), we also install damper and cap combinations that handle both jobs in one component. The combo closes off the flue when the fireplace is not in use, and the screen keeps animals, birds, and debris out when the damper is open. One install, two problems solved.
