Chimney damage may not always be visible, but that doesn’t mean it’s nonexistent. That’s the number one reason to have regular maintenance and inspection. During spring and summer you should take a close look at your chimney, and if you see any of these signs, then be sure to have them repaired. Any time you see visible damage to your chimney structure, call me at Lou Curley Chimney Service at 610-626-2439.

Smoldering chimney fire: If you have dark smoke billowing from the top of your chimney, there’s a good chance you have a fire in there. Dark smoke, flames, and strange roaring or rattling sounds from the chimney, are all signs that you may have a chimney fire. If you spot any of these signs don’t hesitate to call me at the number above.

Rust in the Firebox: Rust in the firebox is also an indication of trouble, as it means that moisture is finding its way into the chimney and draining down, creating even more problems as it travels. Moisture poses several hazards to your chimney, as it damages the bricks and erodes them over time. White stains on the chimney, (known as efflorescence), is another sign of excess moisture.

Damaged or missing chimney cap: The purpose of the chimney cap is to protect the structure of the chimney from water damage and to keep small animals from seeking refuge in the chimney. The cap should be slightly larger than the crown and prevent animals and birds from entering the chimney in search of warmth and shelter.

Cracked chimney crown: A cracked chimney crown is one more problem that needs to be repaired promptly. The chimney crown covers the entire top surface, and protects the wall of the masonry chimney, by preventing water from entering the bricks and flue. However, it’s not uncommon for cracks to emerge as time passes. Cracks allow moisture in, and if they’re not quickly sealed the crown will deteriorate, eventually destroying the chimney.

Spalling: If you happen to see pieces of masonry laying on the ground outside the chimney, that’s a clear sign that moisture is entering the bricks. When the moisture penetrates the masonry it causes the bricks to crumble or flake off. The continued crumbling can cause your chimney to collapse, so don’t hesitate to have it repaired quickly.

If you want your chimney to remain safe and solid, then be sure to detect these issues early, and have the repairs done promptly. At Lou Curley’s Chimney Service we’re here to see to all your repairs speedily and efficiently. Why not give us a call today at 610-626-2439.
