You’ve seen other chimney sweeps doing business throughout town, and they don’t appear to be CSIA certified; so what’s the deal? Is certification really necessary for a chimney sweep? We’ll give you some information about the industry and let you make that decision.

What is the CSIA?

The CSIA, or Chimney Safety Institute of America, is an organization that was formed in 1983. It is dedicated to training chimney professionals so that we can help keep your home and family safe from damage due to a faulty chimney. The certification process includes skills, techniques, and safety practices that every chimney sweep needs to know. They require a yearly dues and ongoing education in order for us to provide the best service possible year after year.

Can Chimney Sweeps Operate without Certification?

Yes, they can. Anyone can be trained or learn to clean chimneys independently of the CSIA. Some great chimney sweeps are even grandfathered into the business through apprenticeship programs. Very few sweeps have apprentices these days, but it was very popular once upon a time.

How Do You Prepare for the CSIA Examinations?

You will need to study three specific publications in order to prepare for what’s on the exams. They will give you the information you need. They are:

  • Successful Chimney Sweeping
  • The 2016 Edition of the National Fire Protection Association 211 Code
  • The 2015 Edition of the International Residential Code

The examinations are not free, so make sure to check pricing if you’re planning to become certified. You will also need to sign the CSIA code of Ethics, which is our pledge to stay current with changes in chimney technology and building codes.
