Thanksgiving is here already and the biggest holiday season of the year is just around the corner. We have a very diverse culture here in Drexel Hill and the surrounding areas, so we see decoration for a variety of holiday types throughout December. Most of the December holidays include some type of gift exchange in which you give people you care about a gift. Give someone you love the gift of a safe chimney for the 2015 holiday season. Schedule and pay for one or more of the following services in advance:

  • Chimney Inspection – The chimney should be inspected at least once per year even if the fireplace or wood stove is used sparingly. The CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) recommends that a regularly used chimney be inspected and cleaned two to three times per year to ensure that it is in proper working form.
  • Chimney Cleaning – A chimney that is used with a fireplace or wood stove develops a sticky residue on the inside of the flue called creosote. This substance is very flammable and responsible for the majority of chimney fires. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have any creosote in the chimney, but it does mean that you shouldn’t let it build up. Creosote should never be more than about one-fourth of an inch thick before it is cleaned away with a chimney brush.
  • Fireplace Inspection or Cleaning – The fireplace needs an inspection and regular cleaning as well. Newer homeowners don’t realize that odd odors from the fireplace could be indicative of bigger problems. They don’t think that a little moisture in the fireplace is an issue because the chimney is a big open hole, right?

We often work with homeowners who aren’t familiar with the inner workings of a chimney or fireplace, so we explain chimney safety and the importance of a regular inspection and cleaning. We like to think that we leave each homeowner just a little more knowledgeable of their fireplace and chimney so they can make more informed decisions regarding both.
