February is quickly coming to an end and we’re looking forward to spring and the new types of holidays to celebrate. Many area homeowners will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter, and even some of the more obscure holidays like Make Up Your Own Holiday Day or National Chip and Dip Day on March 23. We can all get behind that one, right? Whatever holidays you choose to celebrate this spring, make sure all of your holiday decorations are safe and far enough away from the fireplace to prevent fire.

Many homeowners will be closing up the fireplace and chimney for spring and summer, but some will keep them open in case of the occasional chilly night or romantic escapade. It’s extremely important to remember to remove all combustible decorations, holiday or otherwise, before lighting the fireplace. Make sure all combustible materials are at least three feet away from the fireplace opening before you start your fire. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Children and Pets: Fireplace safety with children and pets can get tricky. Both are very curious when it comes to holiday decorations and fireplaces in general. Use baby gates or other safety measures if needed to protect your children and pets from harm around the fireplace.
  • Holiday Parties: Host as many holiday parties as you like; just make sure to lay the ground rules regarding fireplace safety before the party gets started. Remind parents and other responsible adults to help keep an eye on all children and pets, and to help make sure the fireplace is safe.
  • Cover Everything: Feel free to cover the fireplace box and the entire hearth if you’re not using it during the holidays. You can use large pillows or cushions to create a safe area for children to play and avoid sharp corners, and decorate as much as you want as long as the fireplace is dormant.
