Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania is named after a sprawling estate in North Wales that once belonged to a Quaker named Rowland Ellis. The name translates to Great Hill. Bryn Mawr is currently home to a variety of schools, historic points of interest, and several famous people. You may recognize a few names from this list:
- Katharine Hepburn – Four-time Academy Award winner and a graduate of Bryn Mawr College.
- Jayne Mansfield – One of the most well-known actresses of the mid-1950s and early 1960s, and one of the earliest Playboy Playmates, Jayne was born in Bryn Mawr in 1933.
- Kat Dennings – Born in Bryn Mawr. AKA Darcy Lewis, the beloved tech savvy assistant to Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster, in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. Who could forget the way she antagonizes Thor by calling his famous hammer, Mjolnir, “mew mew”?
- Drew Gilpin Faust – The first female president of Harvard University graduated from Bryn Mawr College.
The school system in Bryn Mawr includes everything from elementary school through high school and college. We also have a few private schools and a school for the deaf. Glenays – Also known as Leighton House, this three-story stucco Italian Villa style home was built in three sections. The first section was built in 1859. An addition was built in 1925 and the garden walls were built in 1928; both of these additions were designed by George Howe.
